Keep Your Number(Local Number Portability) FAQ
- Local Number Portability is the ability for a customer to change their local service provider, physical location or calling services without having to change his or her telephone number. This means that you can switch to Triad Telecom as your telephone service provider and keep your current phone number! Triad Telecom offers Local Number Portability as an added benefit to our customers. Unfortunately while we do our best to complete portability requests, we cannot guarantee that all numbers are able to be transferred to Triad Telecom. You are responsible for subscription or usage charges for both your Triad Telecom and existing local phone service during the transfer, even if it takes longer than the estimated 15-20 business days.
What is Local Number Portability (LNP)?
- A letter of authorization is an official document that you provide to Triad Telecom authorizing the transfer of your existing phone number from your current provider to Triad Telecom. This document is the official record that your current provider requires to allow the number to be transferred.
What is a LNP Letter of Authorization (LOA)?
-
1. Contact Triad Telcom to acquire the necessary form(s).
2. Complete all forms, including the Letter of Authorization (LOA).
3. Fax the LOA and the first page of your most recent phone bill to (336) 510-3801.
4. Triad Telecom will send you a confirmation email or call within 48 hours to confirm receipt of your LOA and start the process to transfer your number.
Important:
- Make sure that the address on the LOA is the exact billing address for the active number you wish to transfer.
- Please check that the billing name on the LOA matches the name on file with your current provider.

I am an existing customer and would like to transfer another existing phone number to Triad Telecom, what steps do I need to take to make this happen?
- Once Triad Telecom receives your LOA, we will send you a confirmation email and begin the process to initiate the transfer of your phone number.
What happens once I submit my LOA to Triad Telecom?
- You will receive an e-mail notification or phone call from Triad Telecom when your LOA has been received, when we receive a scheduled date for the transfer of your number, and when your transfer has been successfully completed. If you don't receive an e-mail or call, please contact your Triad Telecom account executive via e-mail or telephone for more information.
How do I find out the status of my transfer request?
- The transfer process takes an average of 15-20 business days from the time we receive your completed documents. If any information is missing on the documents, it will delay the process. After we receive permission from your current carrier, we will email or call you with the date that your phone number will be transferred. When your phone number has been transferred we will email or call you again to let you know that the operation has been completed. You are responsible for subscription or usage charges for both your Triad Telecom and existing local phone service during the transfer, even if it takes longer than the estimated 15-20 business days.
How long does the transfer of my phone number take?
- The number transfer process involves multiple providers to facilitate moving your telephone number. Each provider has a set of procedures with respect to the transfer, and verification/authorization procedures sometimes require additional research to process correctly.
- Important:Once your request has been sent to the provider to process, your provider may reject the request due to lack of correct information, or missing information on the request. This is why it is important to complete the LOA thoroughly and provide an accurate phone bill prior to sending the request.
Why does it take an average of 15-20 business days to transfer my number?
- Once your number has ported to Triad Telecom, you will want to contact your previous provider to ensure you will not be further billed. ONLY do this after your number has ported! Doing so before may cause you to lose your phone number!
Should I contact my current carrier to disconnect my service?
- If you are planning to move before your number is ported to Triad Telecom, you still should not disconnect your current local service. You should contact your current provider and explain that a transfer is in process. Prior planning well before your move is the best course of action.
What if I move before my number is transferred?
- Sometimes telephone numbers can't be transferred to Triad Telecom. In some instances you can correct the problem so your number can be transferred. Unfortunately some customers will not be able to port their number. The most common reasons are:
- You have an outstanding balance with your current provider. Please work with your current provider to resolve the balance and contact Triad Telecom to confirm that we can continue with the transfer.
- You have a "freeze" on your number. Please contact your local (and long distance) provider to have the freeze removed and then contact Triad Telecom to confirm that we can continue with the transfer.
- You have distinctive ring on your telephone number. Please contact your local provider to have the distinctive ring disabled and then contact Triad Telecom to confirm that we can continue with the transfer.
- You have multiple telephone numbers or lines and the provider is unsure which to transfer. Be sure to specify the telephone number to transfer in your Letter of Authorization.
- If you have DSL, see the FAQ "Can I transfer a DSL number to Triad Telecom?" for information on options for DSL customers.
- Some local providers do not have the technical capabilities to port telephone numbers.
- We are not able to transfer international numbers.
- Triad Telecom does not yet have a porting relationship in a few local calling areas.
Why can't I transfer my number?
- No. At this time, Triad Telecom can only transfer US phone numbers.
I have an international phone number, can I transfer it to Triad Telecom?
- Most DSL providers require that you have a telephone number for them to bill your services. In order to transfer a number associated with a DSL account, you need to have the DSL removed from that line and assigned to another number (you would need two numbers on one account to ensure that you do not lose DSL service). Triad Telecom can then transfer your number once this change is complete. Another option is to replace your DSL line with cable internet access. If you select this option, be sure that you don't cancel your phone service until your number is moved to Triad Telecom. Finally, some DSL providers are beginning to offer "naked" DSL, which would allow you to move your phone number. Check with your provider to determine if this is an option.
Can I transfer a DSL number to Triad Telecom?
- Yes. A fax number can be transferred to either a Triad Telecom Residential or Business plan. The process is the same as described in the previous questions.
Can fax numbers be transferred to Triad Telecom?
- You may transfer as many numbers as purchased lines to Triad Telecom.
How do I transfer multiple numbers to Triad Telecom?
- You will receive an email or phone call from Triad Telecom when the transfer of your number has been completed.
How will I know if my local number has been ported?
- Depending on your billing cycle with your old provider, your transfer might have taken place in the middle of the cycle. That is why you would receive a bill after your number already transferred. Another reason you may be billed after your number transferred is that your old provider may not have fully processed the transfer in their systems. This means that your number still remains active somewhere internally at your old provider even though it is working with Triad Telecom. The best way to fix this problem is to contact your previous service provider.
Why am I still receiving bills from my old provider after my number already transferred to Triad Telecom?
- You may see activity on your account before your number transfers because Triad Telecom places test calls through your account prior to shipping your phone adapter. You will also see activity on your account if you have enabled call forwarding on your lines prior to transferring your number.
Why do I see activity on my account before my number is transferred?
- All equipment, installation, and non-recurring charges will be due upon installation. Monthly recurring services are due on the first of each month. Your first monthly bill will contain the prorated amount covering the time of installation through the end of that month. If your installation occurred after the 15th of the month, this prorated amount will be billed on the first of the following month in addition to your first full month's service.
Will I pay for Triad Telecom service if my number has not transferred yet?
- Triad Telecom will notify you before the port occurs and test the number on the day of the port. We will confirm with you once we are sure your ported number is properly working.
Will Triad Telecom confirm with me when the port has occurred?
- Triad Telecom will notify you when your number has been ported. At that time we will disable your temporary number if one has been made available.
What happens to my temporary number once my current number is transferred?
- US numbers are $5.00/month.
What is the cost if I keep my temporary Triad Telecom number?
- Your ported phone number will show on the Caller ID displays.
If I transfer a number to Triad Telecom, what number is shown on Caller ID displays?
- Your primary Triad Telecom number is the number shown on Caller ID displays when you call someone. To change which Triad Telecom number is primary contact your Triad Telecom account executive.
